Historic 84th Annual Emerson Resort & Spa Woodstock Open

Mt. Tremper, New York (July 22, 2019) –  Defending champion Scott Berliner, a 44-year-old assistant professional at Hiland Park Country Club in Queensbury, NY, will be vying for his fourth title at the 84th Annual Emerson Resort & Spa Woodstock Open.  The prestigious tournament will be held on Monday, July 29 at the Woodstock Golf Club.

Berliner chipped in not once, but twice last year en route to a 6-under-par 64 and the $3,000 winner’s share in the Woodstock Open.  Joining Berliner will be Binghamton University standout and Ulster County Amateur champion Justin Lane. Last year, Lane carded a 1-under-par 69 to win the Woodstock Open amateur division.

According to host pro Chris Sanger, there are many new faces confirmed in this year’s field.

“Scott Berliner is the player to beat,” Sanger said. “He's the defending champion and he's also having a good summer playing in Northeastern NY PGA Section events and just finished in the top 15 at the State Open. Justin Lane has been low amateur four times now and he too has been having a good summer, winning the Herdegen (Ulster County Amateur), qualifying for the Ike MGA Stroke Play Championship and Westchester, State and Met Amateurs.

“With the weather forecast and the limited rain we've received in the past few weeks, I expect the course to play firm and fast. Which is the way we prefer the course to play for the best professionals in the area. The greens have been in fantastic shape this summer and I'm excited to see what the winning score will be this year.”

Woodstock Golf Club is a private 9-hole course with panoramic mountain views with fairway routes that navigate players along running creeks.  Past Woodstock Open fields have included Masters champions Gene Sarazen and Doug Ford. This tournament is believed to be the longest running tourney in the country at one site for both professionals and amateurs.

“This is our third year sponsoring the Emerson Resort & Spa Woodstock Open and it promises to be the best yet,” said Emerson Resort & Spa’s Marketing & Sales Director Tamara Murray. “We’re building an exciting roster of pro and amateur players and expect a very competitive day to the final hole.  It’s an honor to be partnered with such a prestigious tournament.  It truly is a long-standing tradition and a legendary event.”

Guests who stay at the Emerson Resort & Spa enjoy a special stay-and-play package at Woodstock Golf Club as well as an opportunity to play nearby Lazy Swan Golf & Country Club designed by golf architect Barry Jordan and the Robert Trent Jones’ design Wiltwyck Golf Club in Kingston.

About the Woodstock Open: The tournament has a rich history since its inaugural event in 1932 and is believed to be the longest running tournament in America on one course open to both professionals and amateur golfers. The par-70 course opened in 1929. Legendary Masters champion and Harrison, NY native Gene Sarazen twice played in the Woodstock Open, finishing fourth in 1966 at the age of 64. Another Masters champion, Doug Ford, played in the 1977 Woodstock Open. The Woodstock Open list of distinguished players includes legendary PGA Tour player and instructor Bob Toski, 1931 PGA Championship winner and longtime Saratoga Spa Golf Course professional Tom Creavy and 5-time PGA Tour winner Ken Green.  Frank Hannigan, who from 1983-1989 was the Executive Director of the United States Golf Association, was an honorary chairman of the Woodstock Open. The tournament once was a 27-hole event until changing to an 18-hole format in 1970. This year, players were challenged on the 5,500-yard Woodstock Golf Club layout that tests players with its well-guarded tree-lined fairways and smooth putting surfaces.
