Sankofa: A Day of African Crafts

Circle Creative Collective and MyKingstonKids present a full day of workshops and experiences for all ages. In the morning come dye up-cycled fabrics using local plants. Midday, meet 5th, 6th, and 7th generation sweetgrass basket weavers from South Carolina who will teach weaving and discuss the history and culture of the Gullah Geechee people. In the afternoon learn to sew a free-form community quilt inspired by Gee's Bend quilters, and explore quilt codes from the Underground Railroad. Join us for community weaving all day! Between workshops, check out the Center For Creative Education’s P.O.O.K. and Ubaka Hill’s performances and drumming! Go to for exact start times of each workshop and to register.
