ONLINE EVENT - Opus 40: Mapmaking Workshop with Elka Gotfryd

A map is essentially a story, told by the mapmaker(s) through visual representation. Every map is based on relativity, whether between locations when we’re on a road trip or connecting points in time when we embark on a process. The mapmaker takes on the important role of determining which information to capture; collecting and compiling the information; and effectively communicating the information. In this workshop, we will take on the responsibility of mapmaker and visual storyteller. Participants will learn to:

  1. Read a map
  2. Identify what a map successfully represents and omits, and how choices in visual representation — including symbology, colors, and fonts — relay stories and biases
  3. Understand how visual representation through maps can enhance or limit our experience of our environment
  4. Gain a heightened awareness of their surroundings, by looking beyond the more common stories captured by map
  5. Develop empathy and openness for others’ perspectives and experiences, by engaging in a collaborative creative process
