Wawarsing means “where the streams wind.” The town’s expansion began with the The D&H Canal, which opened the valley to trade. The water of the Rondout Creek powered mills and factories. Later, the railroads introduced tourists to the natural and pristine beauty of Wawarsing. The Terwilliger House Museum is home to the local history collection owned by Ellenville Public Library.

Visitors come to Wawarsing for recreational activities such as hiking at Minnewaska State Park and exploring the ice caves at Sam’s Point Preserve, visiting Stony Kill Falls or hang gliding.
