Hudson River Day and the First Annual Hudson River Boatbuilding Challenge

The Hudson River Maritime Museum, located at 50 Rondout Landing, on the historic Rondout Creek in downtown Kingston will be hosting its annual Hudson River Day with a featured attraction - the First Annual Hudson River Boatbuilding Challenge on Saturday, June 24, 2017.  10 two-person teams will compete for the title of the world's fastest boatbuilder.  Based on other successful models in Beaufort, NC and Belfast Harbor, ME, HRMM's Boatbuilding Challenge is accepting team registrations and looking for sponsors.

The ten teams will pay a $200 registration fee, and receive the materials and plans to build a 12' Carolina bateau which they will be able to take home at the end of the day.  There will be a "Practice Build" for teams on June 3, 2017.

2 - 4 - 1!  These two-person teams will have 4 hours to build 1 boat which will be judged by professional shipwrights and others.  Cash prizes and awards will be given.  Then the "boatbuilders" must successfully race their bateau on Rondout Creek.  Imagine the excitement on the water -- enough to rival the 2009 Hudson-Fulton Quadricentennial Celebration.

This free family-friendly event will have boatbuilding, boat races and rides; visiting vessels; live music; children's activities; food; vendors and more! What a great way to support the tradition of boatbuilding, history and your community.  Call 845-338-0071, ext. 20 for more info or visit hrmm.org/boatbuilding-challenge.
